Photoshop Actions

Just a short post on the value of Photoshop actions. Actions are a jewel in the sometimes time-wasting world of design. Say you took a picture shoot in bad conditions. You touch up one based on the conditions and want to do the exact same thing to another. Well it couldn’t be easier. To make sure you see the actions window click Window>Actions.

The actions window has several options of recording, playing back etc.

So now to get started. We’ll open an image and apply some adjustments and then replay those same adjustments with other pictures at the click of a button. First open any picture. Let’s say I have a really dark picture that needs to be brightened up a bit. After openning I make a new action (it’s the same button as making a new layer in the layers window except it’s on the actions window) and then click record…

From now on everything you do will be recorded. Lets just say you want to do some tweaks on the brightness and contrast. Do the adjustments and then press stop which is the small square next to the record button. You now have a new action that you can repeat as many times as you want. Open another picture, click on the action of choice, and press play and watch Photoshop do the magic.

OK well here goes… I’ve been working on design for the past several years in various capacities. Most of the work I’ve done has been for on-screen viewing (an e-newsletter for instance.) However I feel that what you see on screen i.e. websites, pictures, newsletters, etc. should be just as beautiful as in print. I’ll be focusing mainly on everyday design work like newsletters, brochures, and business cards, and then some attention to web design or more specifically implementing CSS.

For starters I’d like to make mention of a couple sites containing stock resources (free of charge but please check the lisence.) They are as follows (there are more but these are the ones I use regularly):
